Charitable Giving Program - February

Good Shepherd’s Stewardship Chair (Dean Witty) is introducing a 2016 “Charitable Giving Program” so each month a charity will be selected for inclusion in the program.

Our first giving opportunity was the Diocesan United Thank Offering “UTO”.  UTO is a ministry of the Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God.

February- Grains of Hope

Grains of Hope is a collection of local organizations fighting poverty locally and globally by raising money and packaging nutritious meals for the New Jersey Food Bank and for Haiti.  Last year we packaged 153,618 meals giving two-thirds of the meals to Haiti and one third to the New Jersey Food Bank.  To date we have packaged over a half million meals in the last four years.

What does this mean for Good Shepherd?  Basically, we need to raise money to help fund the cost of the products put in the bags.  $250 buys 1000 meals.    The money needs to be raised by the end of January.  Once again we will be "selling" gift cards.  These cards say "I made a donation to Grains of Hope in your honor which will provide nutritious meals for the hungry."  These cards can be  a presents on their own.  They will be available during Coffee Hour and during the week in the Parish Offices

This year the packing event will be March 13th, 2016 at Pequannock's middle school.  More information about the actual event will follow but keep in mind, it's an amazing event:  hundreds of volunteers, young and old,  packing bags of food in two hour shifts.  Mark your calendars to save the date.  If you would like more information about grains of hope, visit on the web.

Upcoming giving opportunities will continue as follows:  March (the United Food Bank of NJ), April (North Porch), May (Shriners Hospital) and in June (The Episcopal Relief and Development Fund).   The “Charitable Giving Program” will be on the 3rd Sunday of each month and will include the open plate Offertory and your “giving” envelopes which will be placed in the church pews.

Please contact Dean (201-919-3805 or with your suggested charity for the months of July through December.
